Meet Mika Fogelman

Q: What do you do and how long have you been doing that?
A: I’ve been a Zumba instructor at UBC Recreation for two years! I just started my first Kinesiology co-op term at Le Physique as a Client Care Manager and Cardio Trainer and will be here until the end of December.

Q: What inspired you to do what you do?
A: I’ve danced since I was young, and after I stopped taking regular classes, I really missed dancing and choreographing. With Zumba, I was able to dance and choreograph again while creating a class environment where creativity and confidence were encouraged, unlike some of the dance classes I took growing up.

Q: What are your favourite things about Zumba / fitness?
A: I love that there are so many options to work on one’s fitness. Whether it’s dance fitness classes like Zumba, lifting weights, or kayaking, a workout can be completely personalized and really help an individual feel confident in their abilities.
With Zumba, participants are encouraged to be themselves, freestyle dance, show personality in their dancing, and most importantly know that they are in a safe space where they are not judged.

Q: Outside of work, where can people most often find you?
A: Hanging out with family (see pic of my pouty nephew), having a picnic at Kits beach,  waiting in a long line for Sunday brunch, fantasizing about future travels and finally, likely at a UBC Kinesiology Undergraduate Society event

Q: What is your Favourite hobby?
A: Taking photos/filming videos and editing them! For outdoor activities, then definitely kayaking

Q: What’s your favourite music?
A: Any song that makes me feel the need to dance to it (mainly anything in spanish, or sappy acoustic songs)

Q: What’s your favourite exercise?
A: The Plank

Q: What are 3 things people don’t know about you?
A: I was born in Israel and moved to Canada when I was 5, I can speak Hebrew and I went to South Africa for a humanitarian trip

Q: What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A: Cashier or a waitress (I just really loved the idea of using a cash register and a touch screen!)

Q: What’s your spirit animal?
A: I’d like to say flamingo because it’s a beautiful animal but I am most commonly referred to as a chipmunk because of my big cheeks!

Q: Favourite TV show?
A: Black Mirror

Q: If you could be on any reality TV show what would it be?
A: The Bachelor

Q: What’s your guilty pleasure?
A: Also The Bachelor

Q: Who is your Celebrity crush?
A: Ryan Reynolds
